Tesco and NET launch transformative programme to create new opportunities for local jobseekers
A major new employment initiative has begun in Goole this week as Tesco, National Employer Training (NET), and Jobcentre Plus launched a Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) designed to create clear career pathways and boost local employment.
The programme opened with a well-attended recruitment and induction event at Tesco’s Distribution Centre, where over 35 jobseekers learned about the opportunities available. Following the session, 24 individuals signed up to take part in the newly designed training and employment pathway – a strong indicator of local enthusiasm and demand for structured, supportive routes into work.
Learners already feeling the impact
The SWAP programme began immediately with tailored training delivered by NET’s experienced team. Early feedback shows that learners are already gaining confidence, clarity and motivation.
David Millar, a keen learner taking part in the programme, shared:
“The varied audience capability increases the challenge for the trainers, but Fiona and Adrian have coped admirably. The pace has kept everyone engaged. The subjects covered have been highly relevant in building awareness of different work environments.”
Kim Bridges, another participant, added:
“I am finding the course really helpful and knowledge-based. It’s giving me confidence and preparing me for the next step. I’m genuinely glad I decided to take part.”
Site visit brings the workplace to life
An extensive tour of Tesco’s Goole Distribution Centre provided participants with first-hand insight into operations, workplace culture, and career progression. The visit significantly boosted engagement and helped learners visualise themselves in the environment.
David Millar commented:
“The site was incredibly informative. It’s clear Tesco is taking real steps to improve its local reputation through a thorough induction process. Having the Depot Manager introduce himself was a positive touch, and the enthusiasm from trainers and HR increased group engagement. It’s one of the cleanest, most well-organised warehouses I’ve encountered.”
For Kim Bridges, the experience was particularly eye-opening:
“I’ve never worked in this type of environment before, but I found it fascinating. Seeing staff working helped me understand what the role entails, and I could see a lot of potential in working here. I felt more comfortable once I spoke with the team on the tour.”
Both participants agreed that the visit helps candidates decide confidently whether the role is right for them and is given them extensive knowledge to feel suitably prepared for Interview.
How the SWAP programme helps
The programme structure offers a clear route into employment through sector-specific training via NET, employability development, a full site induction, and learner support throughout.
Crucially, interviews for all programme completers are already scheduled for the week commencing 15th December 2025 – giving candidates a clear and immediate pathway into employment with Tesco.
Jamie Green, Director of National Employer Training, said:
“At NET, we believe passionately in changing lives and creating opportunities. This programme is a powerful example of what can happen when employers and training partners work together with a shared purpose.
“We are incredibly proud to support our learners on their journey, giving them the confidence, skills and guidance they need to move into meaningful employment. Being part of their story – and providing the extensive support that helps them thrive – is at the heart of everything we do.”
A partnership built on progress
The SWAP programme will run over the coming weeks, with learners continuing their training before progressing into interviews and, potentially, into long-term careers with Tesco.
This collaborative initiative demonstrates the commitment of Tesco, NET, and Jobcentre Plus to investing in people, strengthening communities, and opening doors to new opportunities.
