A fresh start in the NHS: How the right training opens new opportunities

Case Study: Wafa Mohamed

Course: CSCS York, SIA York, NHS SWAP

Training Provider: National Employer Training

Wafa Mohamed enrolled on training with National Employer Training (NET) with a clear objective: to gain the skills, experience and confidence needed to pursue a career in care within the NHS. Motivated and committed, she wanted structured support that would help her progress into a sector she was passionate about.

By completing a combination of CSCS, SIA and the NHS Sector-Based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPs), as part of the NHS’ widening access demonstrator programme., Wafa was able to build a broad foundation of skills while focusing on her long-term goal of working in healthcare.

Developing confidence and employability skills

One of the most impactful elements of the training for Wafa was the group discussions. These sessions encouraged learners to share different perspectives, helping Wafa develop a wider understanding of working with others and improving her confidence in speaking within a group.

The course structure promoted participation, teamwork and reflection, all of which helped prepare Wafa for real workplace environments and strengthened her employability skills.

Inclusive support from tutors

Wafa describes the tutors at National Employer Training as highly supportive and approachable. Tutors consistently offered guidance and reassurance whenever she needed extra help, creating a positive and inclusive learning environment.

As English is not Wafa’s first language, this could have been a barrier to learning. However, National Employer Training ensured reasonable adjustments were in place, including allowing the use of a translation app during sessions. This support enabled Wafa to fully participate, share her ideas confidently and progress without feeling restricted.

NHS employment outcomes and impact

Following completion of her training, Wafa progressed into work within the NHS, where she applies the skills and knowledge gained through National Employer Training on a daily basis.

She reports increased confidence in her role and a stronger ability to manage her workload effectively. The training helped her understand expectations within the NHS, work well as part of a team and approach tasks with confidence and professionalism. As a result, her work feels more structured and manageable, allowing her to deliver care without feeling overwhelmed.

These outcomes demonstrate the impact of National Employer Training’s inclusive and practical approach in supporting learners into NHS roles and equipping them with the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

Achieving goals and future progression

The course helped Wafa achieve a key personal goal — moving into a career she is passionate about and feeling fully confident in her ability to progress. Her advice to others considering the programme is to not be shy or afraid, even if there are perceived barriers such as language. With the right support, these challenges can be overcome.

Wafa’s biggest takeaway from the course is the belief that it is never too late to pursue something meaningful if you commit to it. She also values the ability to work effectively with people of different ages and backgrounds, a skill developed through the training and essential for her ongoing career in healthcare.

Through tailored training, inclusive delivery and strong learner support, National Employer Training has played a key role in helping Wafa build confidence, develop essential NHS-ready skills and progress into meaningful employment.
