Supporting returns to the NHS: How National Employer Training helps people re-enter healthcare
Case Study: Clare Bond
Course: NHS SWAP York
Training Provider: National Employer Training
Clare Bond enrolled on the NHS Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) York, as part of the NHS’ widening access demonstrator programme, with a clear goal: to return to hospital work and rebuild her career within the NHS. Having previously worked in a hospital environment, Clare had always wanted to get back into healthcare. However, she found the NHS application process daunting after being out of work for some time.
After attending an information session at York Jobcentre, Clare decided that the course delivered by National Employer Training would give her the confidence, insight and practical support she needed. She felt it would help her better understand the NHS, the roles available, and how to successfully navigate the application process.
A supportive and engaging learning experience
Clare describes the course as intense but extremely informative. She found every aspect valuable and felt fully prepared for the next stage of her journey. The course content was brought to life through engaging videos and a knowledgeable guest speaker, which helped deepen her understanding of working within the NHS.
The tutor played a key role in Clare’s success. Clare explains that her tutor, Clare, always took the time to explain things clearly and made sure everyone understood what they were doing. Despite learners being at different levels and having varying abilities, the tutor managed the group effectively and ensured no one was left behind.
Overcoming challenges together
One of the main challenges on the course was the mixed ability of learners in the group. However, with strong guidance and inclusive teaching from National Employer Training’s tutor, Clare felt supported throughout. The structured approach and clear explanations helped her build confidence and stay focused, even when the course felt demanding.
Real outcomes and lasting impact
The skills and knowledge Clare gained are ones she uses every day in her role. Most importantly, the course helped her achieve a major personal goal. After being out of work for over a year, Clare successfully returned to employment in a hospital environment – something she is extremely proud of.
Her biggest takeaway from the course is understanding the positive impact she can have on other people’s lives. This has strengthened her motivation to continue progressing within healthcare.
Looking to the future
Clare would fully recommend the NHS SWAP course to anyone considering a role as a Healthcare Assistant or looking to build a career within the NHS. Thanks to the support and training provided by National Employer Training, she now feels confident about her future and has renewed ambition.
Her long-term goal is to become a paramedic, and she sees this course as a vital stepping stone that has made that dream feel achievable.
