This Sector-Based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) is the ideal first step for anyone interested in a meaningful and rewarding career in Health and Social Care. Whether you’re looking to work in residential care homes, domiciliary support, or community-based care, this programme provides a strong foundation in the core principles, safety practices, and values needed to succeed in the care sector.
Designed with the needs of care home employers in mind, the programme offers face-to-face learning alongside clear progression routes into further training, qualifications, and employment.
SWAP Qualifications:
Learners will complete:
- Level 1 Certificate in Health Care
An introduction to working in care, including communication, person-centred support, and understanding roles and responsibilities. - Level 2 Award in Safeguarding and Protection
Teaches how to recognise, respond to, and report abuse or harm across adult and child care settings. - Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention and Control
Equips learners with knowledge of hygiene protocols and how to reduce the spread of infection — essential in all care environments. - Level 1 Certificate in Personal Development for Employability (PDE)
Develops confidence, teamwork, and communication skills relevant to any health and social care role.
Entry Level:
- Aged 19+
- Must be eligible for public funding (Universal Credit, JSA, ESA)
- Caring and empathetic individuals with a genuine interest in supporting others
- Basic English and Maths skills (assessment provided)
Delivery Methods:
- Delivered face-to-face over 1 to 2 weeks
- Led by experienced care sector tutors
- Includes practical activities, discussions, and scenario-based learning
- Full support provided for learners of all backgrounds
What Next:
After completing the SWAP, learners can:
- Apply for roles as Care Assistants, Support Workers, or Residential Care Workers
- Progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Care, delivered in the workplace to support career development
- Enrol in distance learning qualifications such as:
- Safe Handling of Medication
- Infection Prevention and Control (Advanced)
- Dementia Awareness
- Access continued support with CVs, applications, and interview preparation
- Explore specialist pathways such as mental health support, end-of-life care, or learning disabilities support
